The Bushey Academy takes its commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people very seriously.

Every single member of staff working at the academy has an accredited Level 1 safeguarding qualification, and also completes an additional external online child protection training course each year. Furthermore, all staff have been trained again for 2016/17 on the government's Prevent Strategy which deals with extremism.

Separate training is provided to staff in the academy who are representatives of external agencies -this is in addition to the safeguarding training conducted by their own employers, and is pertinent to our direct context and academy procedures.

The academy has invested considerable resources to build significant internal capacity and additional expertise in relation to safeguarding. Although safeguarding is the responsibility of all members of the academy’s staff, the immediate leadership structure is as follows:

Support for families is crucial  for achieving the best outcomes for children and young people. Parents and carers are not the only influence on a child's life chances, but effective parenting is one of the strongest protective factors for any child.
Hertfordshire County Council's Childhood Support Services have developed a directory that shows all parenting provision in one place, as well as courses that are available for parents and carers. These courses include:

On rare occasions, young people experience bullying, either directly face to face, or via electronic communication and social media.

The academy has a zero tolerance approach to bullying of any kind and works hard to educate students about the importance of respect, empathy and tolerance. Our whole school approach is outlined in the following policy:

The Internet has many positive benefits for young people, including helping them to develop their education, but it also has a darker side. It is essential that students are taught to keep themselves safe whilst online and they must be alert to potential dangers. Mental Health

All students have education around how to keep themselves healthy emotionally and to deal with the stress of everyday life and specific events. During Autumn 2 (2016/17) the academy will run a resilience programme, designed to support students emotionally.
